Did you know cyclists have the same legal right to use most public roads as drivers do?

That’s the reminder from Nottawasaga OPP, which says it has recently received reports of aggressive and unsafe behaviour toward cyclists in Essa Township, particularly along Mill Street.

Police said that under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, bicycles are considered vehicles. This means cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers.

The OPP explained cyclists are not required to ride on sidewalks, which are generally reserved for pedestrians and children under 10.

According to the OPP, cyclists should normally ride about one metre from the curb or parked cars but can also take up the full lane when needed, for example, when avoiding obstacles or preparing to turn left.

When it comes to passing, police stressed drivers must leave at least one metre of space between their vehicle and a cyclist. If that can’t be done safely, drivers are required to wait until there is enough room. Failing to provide that buffer can lead to fines and demerit points under provincial law.

The OPP also warned using a vehicle to intimidate or harass a cyclist could lead to criminal charges such as dangerous driving, assault, or criminal negligence.

Police pointed out that in the event of a collision, the law places the burden on the driver to prove they were not at fault. Because vehicles pose a greater risk, OPP said drivers are expected to exercise extra caution around vulnerable road users.

As for cyclists, police urge them to follow the rules of the road by obeying signs and signals, using hand signals, equipping bikes with lights, reflectors and a bell, and wearing a helmet if under 18.

“Let’s work together to make our roads safer for everyone. Respect. Patience. Safety. That’s how we share the road,” OPP stated in a post about the issue.
