Dangerous driver arrested after fleeing police and nearly striking pedestrian: Barrie Police

A heavy police presence swarmed Bayfield Street in Barrie Thursday morning, resulting in the arrest of one person.

Multiple police vehicles attended the scene near Sophia Street as officers blocked the area to motorists. The man, who was known to police, was driving while under suspension when he was observed on Essa Road, just west of Anne Street.

A uniformed officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off on Bradford Street. Police allege the man continued to operate the vehicle and nearly struck a pedestrian near Sophia Street.

He then drove toward Bayfield Street, where he reportedly collided with scaffolding surrounding a building under construction. Barrie Police were able to position themselves and safely stop the fleeing car.

As a result of the investigation, a 33-year-old Barrie man was arrested. A small grey passenger vehicle was also involved in the collision.

The driver, along with a 35-year-old woman passenger from Tiny Township were taken into custody.

The man is now facing a plethora of charges; including flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation and impaired operation.
