Change is coming to Baysville’s main strip with traffic and safety targeted

Baysville, Ont.'s main street will undergo a major facelift that will include a roundabout with construction beginning on Mon., Oct. 6, 2025.

Change is coming to Baysville’s main strip this fall as work begins on the first project under the new Muskoka Main Streets initiative, aimed at giving small-town cores a safer, more welcoming feel.

Work began this week, with construction crews starting on a new curb and sidewalk along Muskoka Road 117, from south of University Street to Brunel Road. It’s the first stage of a larger redevelopment project that officials say will shape about 780 metres of roadway through the heart of Baysville.

The work will feature a new roundabout, upgraded pedestrian crossings, a multi-use trail, and a smoother road surface.

District officials say the project was shaped by local feedback through two surveys and several community meetings, where nearly 500 residents shared their ideas. They say residents wanted slower traffic, safer sidewalks and cycling routes, and a more attractive streetscape.

During construction, motorists can expect minor detours and temporary traffic changes. Signs will be posted to guide traffic.

Construction will pause during the winter and resume in spring.

When complete, the roundabout is expected to improve traffic flow and safety by slowing vehicles. It will also serve as a “gateway” into the community.

And officials say this is just the beginning. The Baysville project is the first of several planned under Muskoka Main Streets.
