Barrie nears record temperature for Oct. 4

Despite it being the second official weekend of fall, the Barrie area is one of many across southern and central Ontario experiencing summer heat, which could result in record temperature highs.

The forecast

As of Saturday afternoon, the forecasted high for the day was 28 degrees (with a humidex of 32) according to Environment Canada’s weather station at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport.

“The last time we had temperatures this warm on October fourth and fifth was 120 years ago,” said David Phillips, Environment Canada climatologist, in an interview with CTV News on Friday.

He was not wrong. If Saturday’s temperature reaches 28 degrees, it would set a record high for October 4, but only according to some of the region’s historical data.

The almanac

In a Saturday phone conversation with Phillips, he reminded that Barrie’s weather stations have changed several times dating back to 1866, which means that each station has different records from different years.

Specifically, here are the five Barrie weather stations listed by Environment Canada and their respective record high for October 4:

• Barrie (1866-1957): 27.8 degrees set in 1900.
• Barrie WPCC (1977-2008): 28 degrees set in 2005.
• Barrie AUT (1995-2003): 25 degrees set in 1997.
• Barrie Landfill (2011-2022): 23 degrees set in 2017.
• Barrie-Oro (2004-2024): 28.2 degrees set in 2005.

And here is each station’s record high for October 5:

• Barrie: 28.3 degrees set in 1916
• Barrie WPCC: 30 degrees set in 2005.
• Barrie AUT: 23.3 degrees set in 1997.
• Barrie Landfill: 24 degrees set in 2023.
• Barrie Oro: 27.1 degrees set in 2005.

A new record?

Therefore, if Saturday’s temperature exceeds 28.2 degrees, it would set a record high across all of Barrie’s stations. Sunday’s temperature would have to exceed 30 degrees.

Phillips also reminds that those determinations can only be made once Environment Canada confirms the hourly highs and lows for each day.
