A snow-buried fire hydrant is a bad sign, here’s why

Did you know that a snow-covered fire hydrant can slow down emergency response? Fire hydrants aren’t just for line flushing and testing water pressure - they’re essential during fires.

“Fire trucks carry a finite amount of water, so one of the responders’ first tasks upon arrival is locating a water supply from the nearest hydrant,” stated the City of Barrie.

When hydrants are covered in snow or ice, precious time is lost.

“Although there are no rules concerning who should clear hydrants, it’s generally considered the responsibility of the residents occupying property near a hydrant,” continued the city.

Clearing fire hydrants

Barrie has over 4,000 hydrants around the city. Here’s how you can help keep hydrants near your home clear and easy to access.

Clear at least one metre (three feet) around the hydrant and make a path to the street. Elderly people or those with medical conditions may benefit from their friends’ or neighbours’ assistance to keep those areas clear.

“Snow removal from public hydrants is performed proactively and upon request by a contractor that primarily works throughout the evening and/or early morning hours,” stated the city. “But depending on the snowfall it’s not always possible for the contractor to clear large amounts of fire hydrants in a timely manner.”
