‘We just kind of rock and roll’: East Coast Music Awards set to kick off in St. John’s

Newfoundland musician Mick Davis is getting ready for the ECMAs this week.

The East Coast Music Awards return to Newfoundland this week, shining a spotlight on some of the region’s top talent.

The 2025 ECMAs officially get underway Wednesday in St. John’s, with a packed lineup of showcases, awards presentations, and industry events. Artists from across the East Coast are descending on the city, including hometown favourites like Mick Davis.

“The thing for me, it’s just getting to see everybody and having fun and welcoming them to my hometown,” said Mick in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly.

Born in St. John’s and raised in the small fishing town of Wesleyville, Davis has carved out a name for himself both as a solo artist and frontman of the band Mick Davis & Thin Love. His latest album “Garbage Street” dives into what he describes as a mix of light and dark — a reflection of the highs and lows that often come with life and music.

“I write my best songs when I’m just walking and thinking,” Davis said during the interview at Bowring Park, one of his favourite places in the city. “I came here a lot as a kid with my family. It’s peaceful. It helps me clear my head.”

This year’s ECMAs feature dozens of performances, including rising stars and established acts across genres, from folk to hip hop to country. Industry professionals from across the country are also expected to attend, making it a prime networking opportunity for local musicians.

Davis says he’s excited to hit the stage, but even more thrilled to be doing it in his own backyard.

“We just kind of rock and roll, until the break of dawn, until the set is over. We just do what we do.”

Davis performs with his band at the Official ECMA kickoff party Wednesday, and the Awards Gala on Thursday.

The East Coast Music Awards run from May 7 to 11 in St. John’s.
