Northern Ont. police free moose tangled in a wire fence

OPP on Manitoulin Island freed a moose tangled in a wire fence along Highway 6 over the weekend using tools they had on hand.

Police came to the rescue of a young moose who got himself tangled in a wire fence near the swing bridge on Manitoulin Island.

Two members of the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police came across the stuck moose May 9 on Highway 6 near the bridge by the roadway.

“The moose was lying on the ground and unable to free itself,” the OPP said in a news release May 11.

“Using the tools they had on hand, and a bit of teamwork, the officers carefully cut the fence around the moose’s legs and were able to free the moose without injury. After a brief moment to recover, the young moose stood up and walked away.”

While police more often spend time putting people away, officers were happy to set the young moose free.

“Sometimes policing brings unexpected challenges, and in some cases, that occasionally includes lending a hand to a moose in need,” police said.
