P.E.I. makes changes to trapping, snaring rules following recommendations

Prince Edward Island has implemented changes to its fur harvesting regulations after recommendations from A Review of Regulated Fur Trapping.

The provincial Forests, Fish and Wildlife division made the adjustments to modernize the rules and to encourage more humane trapping. The adjustments also help reduce the risks of pets getting caught in snares.

The province said the regulatory changes will:

• require certified trappers to complete ongoing training by introducing a continuing education requirement for trappers to maintain eligibility
• allow landowners to remove traps set on their property without permission
• introduce additional landowner permission requirements before traps are placed on private land, and establish a higher permission standard for snares
• prohibit snares on public lands
• prohibit use of bait in conjunction with snares
• require the use of a killing neck snare design which improves humaneness
• allow live-restraining snares

The changes will be in place for the upcoming trapping and snaring season. The training requirement will begin this season and be fully phased in by 2029.
