Springhill Institution locked down after three inmates hospitalized

The Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia was locked down after an assault on three inmates on Sunday.

All three inmates went to an outside hospital for assessment and treatment, according to media relations with Correctional Service Canada (CSC). Two of them are in stable condition while one has returned to the institution.

There were no other reported injuries.

“The situation was quickly contained and remains under control,” Correctional Service Canada said in an email. “The facility is currently on lockdown while an investigation is underway, and we are working to identify the exact sequence of events.”

Cpl. Carlie McCann, public information officer with the Nova Scotia RCMP, says officers attended the institution on Sunday. So far, no charges have been laid.

“The safety and security of our institutions, staff, and the public remains the Correctional Service of Canada’s highest priority,” CSC said. “CSC has zero tolerance for violence, and criminal or disciplinary charges may be laid against anyone found to be involved in violent incidents within its institutions.

“As required under the Privacy Act, we cannot release personal information related to those involved.”
