The Port of Halifax says 2024 was another strong year for them despite a slight dip in containerized cargo volumes compared to 2023. The port says 42 vessels larger than 10,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) made 117 calls in 2024; it had 107 TEU calls in 2023. “The global geopolitical situation continued to have an impact on Halifax’s containerized cargo, reflected in reduced volumes during Q1-Q3,” said Fulvio Fracassi, president and CEO of the Port of Halifax, in a news release. “In Q4, diverted cargo from other ports and the general shipping peak season resulted in stronger volumes. Overall, containerized cargo was down 6.8 per cent from 2023.” Containerized cargo volumes totalled 509,273 TEU in 2024 and totalled 546,163 TEU in 2023. The top containerized imports include clothing, consumer products, furniture, machinery and equipment, and iron/steel products.
