Halifax police shoot man who barricaded himself in home

Police presence remains in Halifax neighbourhood

A barricaded man was shot by police in the Fairmount area of Halifax Thursday morning after he allegedly threatened responding officers with a weapon.

Halifax Regional Police says officers responded to a report of a barricaded man in a home on Arlington Avenue just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“Throughout the evening our officers spoke with the man, who was threatening police, and our crisis negotiators worked with the man to try to de-escalate the situation,” Const. Martin Cromwell told CTV News.

Police shot the man after he allegedly pointed a firearm at officers through a window around 7:10 a.m.

“That man did point a firearm at our officers, at which time our officers returned fire and shot the man,” said Cromwell.

A woman known to the man was also inside the home at the time. She was taken out around 8:30 a.m. and treated by EHS for non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was taken into custody around 8:35 a.m. and taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

Police said the standoff was an isolated incident and charges are anticipated.

Police remained in the area throughout the day as their investigation continues. The area reopened to traffic around 1 p.m.

Halifax Regional Police has referred the shooting to the Serious Incident Response Team, which is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.

Power was also shut off in the area early Thursday morning. Nova Scotia Power said it was an “emergency outage for public safety.” Electricity has since been restored.

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, a man claiming to be the person involved in the standoff called the CTV Atlantic newsroom and spoke to anchor Bruce Frisko.

Frisko said the man sounded flustered, but polite, and told him the problem stemmed from an incident in Ontario that he had tried to resolve with police.

“I am being railroaded because of something that happened, and I can prove this and they know this, because of something that happened up in Ontario,” he told Frisko.

The man said he was in the house with his daughter.

“The police have been here, they’ve been here for hours,” he said.

The phone line went dead shortly after and he never called back.

‘It’s been scary’

Area resident Robert Gooding says he heard police on loudspeakers Wednesday night talking to someone in the house.

He was then blocked from coming home Thursday morning when coming back from a bike ride on a nearby trail.

“And obviously I saw the police officers and cars down there and I was unable to come up the hill to my house,” he told CTV Atlantic.

Gooding believes he heard gunfire shortly after the power went off in the neighbourhood.

“I could be wrong, it could have been something else, but I heard other people saying the same thing, so it’s been scary,” he added.

“And of course everybody’s mostly concerned that whoever was in the house is OK and there’s a decent outcome for everybody.”
