The Nova Scotia RCMP is investigating several copper wire thefts in the Colchester, Cumberland and Hants counties in recent days. Police learned the telecommunication lines in two areas around Debert and Masstown were cut between July 28 and Aug. 4. Lengths of cables were stolen, which caused phone and internet outages, according to an RCMP news release. Officers in Cumberland County learned a “significant length of a power line” was cut and pulled from the ground outside a building in a rural area near Southampton on or around Tuesday. Police also responded to the theft of cable from a vacant building in Hantsport on Tuesday, which damaged an electrical transformer. “Copper wire thefts have the potential to be incredibly dangerous for those involved,” the release reads. “Interfering with power lines or electrical infrastructure without the proper training, equipment, and expertise significantly increases personal and public safety risk.” Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call police or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.
