Maritimers make last minute travel plans ahead of holiday weekend

Travellers at Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport are hoping for a swift and smooth flight, as they get set for a busy holiday weekend.

“I am travelling to Toronto and I’m visiting my family and friends. I have big plans for dinners, and we are going out clubbing and shopping,” says traveller Priyansi Italiya.

“My flight is delayed right now, so I’m not sure if I’ll be reaching Toronto or not, but I’m worried about the flight when I’m coming back.”

Though officials say most of the holiday traffic came and went, they’re encouraging people to check the status of their flight beforehand.

“It’s important to remember, especially in the winter season, that winter weather in other parts of the country can also affect flights,” says Leah Batstone, the Halifax International Airport Authority’s communications manger.

“Even though there may not be snow or winter weather here, there still could be impacts to the flight schedules overall. So, it’s always good to just confirm that information with your airline before you get to the airport.”

Other Maritimers are hoping to a smooth departure by bus.

“I’m going from Halifax to Moncton today on the bus… Best way to go,” says one woman travelling at Halifax’s Via Rail.

Batstone also encourages air passengers to check which items are suitable to bring.

“CATSA has a lot of tips on what you can and can’t bring in your carry on and in your checked bag and over the holidays that can include wrapped gifts. So, it’s an important one to keep in mind. They have all that information on their website,” she says.

She also says airport traffic is expected to pick up after Christmas.

“Things quiet down a little bit as we get closer to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Everyone is hopefully where they want to be for the holidays, and we’ll see an uptick in activity as well on Boxing Day and onwards,” says Batstone.
