Lockdown ends at Springhill Institution, homemade ‘stabbing weapons’ found during search

A nearly two-week lockdown has ended at a federal prison in Springhill, N.S.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said the lockdown began on March 15 after three inmates were assaulted at the Springhill Institution that day.

All three went to an outside hospital for treatment and later returned to the medium-security federal facility.

CSC said the assailants were identified and “appropriate actions” were taken.

CSC says an “exceptional search” has been done and the institution has resumed normal operations.

Contraband and unauthorized items were seized, including homemade stabbing weapons, during the search, according to a news release from the agency.

Visits have also been reinstated at the institution.
