Halifax ramp to be closed for nearly 2 years for Windsor Street Exchange project

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax will be closed to all vehicle traffic this weekend and one ramp in the city is now closed for two years.

A ramp in Halifax is scheduled to be closed for nearly two years as work on the long-awaited Windsor Street Exchange project gets started.

The Halifax Regional Municipality says the ramp connecting Massachusetts Avenue to Highway 111 toward the Windsor Street Exchange will be closed to traffic from 7 p.m. Thursday to the end of 2027.

“To protect both drivers and construction crews, the speed limit in the Highway 111 construction zone has been reduced to 50 km/h,” a news release from the municipality reads. “The municipality is reminding drivers to follow all posted safety signage and be aware that speed fines double in construction zones.

“Rumble strips are being installed at the entrance to the construction zone from the MacKay Bridge to alert drivers to slow down and maintain a safe speed.”

The project involves the redesign of the Bedford Highway-Windsor Street-Lady Hammond Road intersection and is expected to cost roughly $150 million.

The construction work includes the creation of an overpass to connect Bayne Street and Lady Hammond Road, sidewalk replacement, roadway realignment and the installation of new multi-use paths.

The municipality says roughly 48,000 vehicles go through the Windsor Street intersection per day.
