Halifax police investigating homicide after 70-year-old man dies in north end

Halifax police are investigating the death of a 70-year-old man.

Police are investigating the death of a man in the north end of Halifax Wednesday afternoon as a homicide.

Emergency crews responded to a report of an injured man at a home on Richmond Street around 1:30 p.m.

Life-saving measures were performed but the man was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the victim as 70-year-old Brian David Johnson of Halifax.

An autopsy was performed Thursday and his manner of death was confirmed to be homicide.

Police have not said whether they are looking for a suspect, though they do not believe it was a random incident.

Const. Martin Cromwell says no charges have been laid at this time.

“We understand that an incident like this in the community can and will cause a lot of concern for community members and we just want to reassure the community that our officers are present and are available for somebody to approach them and voice their concerns,” he says.

The investigation is still in the early stages.

Halifax Regional Police is asking anyone with information to call them at 902-490-5020.

“In any incident such as this, a tragic incident, we always appreciate and ask the public’s support in providing any information that they may have and they can do so by calling police or Crime Stoppers,” Cromwell says.

The incident marks the fifth homicide in the Halifax area this year.
