Halifax is continuing its free transit program for Grade 7 to 12 students for the 2026-2027 school year despite funding cuts from the provincial government. The Student Transit Pass program allows eligible students unlimited travel on all Halifax buses and ferries. The provincial government previously provided $1.2 million to the program, but last February they announced they would now be spending $600,000. The Halifax Regional Municipality says the Department of Social Development is funding transit passes for more than 1,700 Halifax youths aged 13 to 18 connected to employment support and income assistance. The Halifax Regional Centre for Education will fund transit passes for students at five schools where public transit is more practical than school buses. The municipality will cover the transit passes for all remaining Grade 7 to 12 students, including those who are homeschooled or attend private schools. The program will be delivered through the HFXGO mobile fare payment app. Physical passes will be available upon request. The passes will be valid from Sept. 1, 2026 to Aug. 31, 2027.
