An upcoming court date for the proposed York1 landfill in Dresden has been rescheduled. It was initially scheduled for Sept. 21 but has been pushed back to Nov. 17. This is due to the volume of documents submitted and to give Chatham-Kent’s legal team time to review them and prepare. Chatham-Kent says it has been in contact with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks (MECP) to get answers from the community on how Ontario plans to gather community feedback. The MECP has confirmed there will be an opportunity for community feedback, part of the Environmental Registry of Ontario process. The municipality says once it is released through the website, the community will be given 45 days to give their comments. Chatham-Kent’s expert review findings will be posted on the Defend Dresden Let’s Talk page. “The ongoing court case is not a final determination of whether York1 can proceed with its proposed landfill and waste processing project,” Chatham-Kent wrote in a news release. “The court case only deals with whether local zoning requirements apply to York1’s proposed project. York1 has commenced a court application against the municipality, arguing that it does not require zoning approvals.” It added that current zoning for the site doesn’t allow a landfill or large-scale waste processing facility. Chatham-Kent will respond to the court application, maintaining zoning approvals are needed. Residents will continue to be informed as the legal and provincial review processes move forward.
