Firefighters battled a fire at a vacant building in Dartmouth, N.S., for several hours over the weekend. Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency was called shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday to a fire on Pleasant Street. District Chief Steve Bussey said when crews arrived, they could see smoke coming from the building. The fire was quickly upgraded to a second alarm fire, which resulted in more crews being called in, he said. More than 30 firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control. The section of the building where the fire broke out was vacant, though Bussey noted the other end of the strip mall is not. He said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Halifax Regional Police also attended the scene to assist with traffic control while crews worked. Pleasant Street between Prince Arthur and Arthur streets was closed for several hours but reopened around noon. At that time, crews were still on scene monitoring for hot spots.
