Cape Breton Regional Municipality residents can request a free smoke alarm, thanks to a new program aimed at promoting fire safety education. Residents can complete an online form to request a free smoke alarm through the Smoke Alarm Installation Program, which is run by the municipality. “To ensure the program benefits as many residents as possible, one smoke alarm will be provided per floor with bedrooms. For example, if you have two bedrooms on the same floor, you’ll receive one alarm. If bedrooms are on two different floors, you’ll receive two alarms,” reads a news release from the municipality. Smoke alarms will be distributed based on need and in the order requests are received, according to the municipality. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31, or while supplies last. The municipality says members of the fire department will install the smoke alarms and educate residents on operation, testing and maintenance.
