Arrest made, thousands of lobsters released in Cape Breton after seizure

One person has been arrested in Nova Scotia after dozens of crates of lobsters were seized nearly 500 kilometres away from where they were harvested.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is investigating after thousands of lobsters were seized in Nova Scotia.

Fishery officers seized 87 crates of lobsters originally harvested in the St. Peter’s Canal area of Cape Breton, also known as Lobster Fishing Area 29, on Oct. 16.

DFO says the lobsters were taken to a fish plant in Port Mouton, nearly 500 kilometres away.

One person was found and arrested nearby in Liverpool in connection with the shipment and for allegedly giving false statements to a fishery officer.

A total of 6,466 lobsters were taken back to LFA 29 and released back into the ocean.

DFO says no additional details will be provided, citing the ongoing investigation.
