After 120 years, a hospital in Antigonish, N.S., will have a new name. The St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, which was founded in 1906, will change its name to the Antigonish Memorial Regional Hospital on Oct. 1, according to a news release from Nova Scotia Health. “The new name was developed from suggestions shared during internal engagement sessions and activities held in June with hospital staff, physicians, volunteers and learners,” the release reads. The name change will come as the Mission Assurance Agreement between the Sisters of St. Martha, the Department of Health and Wellness, and Nova Scotia Health, ends on Sept. 30. The agreement has been in place since 1996. “The Sisters’ stewardship, service and leadership in healthcare includes much more than the delivery of exemplary care,” said a statement from Minister of Health and Wellness Michelle Thompson last March. “It has also contributed to the education and preparation of thousands of healthcare professionals including nurses, lab technicians and X-ray technicians.” With files from CTV News Atlantic’s Jeremy Hull For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
