AI weapons detection system coming to Cape Breton Regional Hospital

An AI-powered weapons detection system is being installed at the entrance to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital emergency department in Sydney, N.S.

Nova Scotia Health announced in December it would continue installing the system at emergency departments across the province after a successful pilot project at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, N.S.

The first new systems were installed at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Infirmary site in Halifax and at the Dartmouth General Hospital that month.

Starting Thursday, all visitors coming through the Cape Breton ED entrance will be screened.

Nova Scotia Health says any item classified as a weapon, looks like a weapon or is “reasonably deemed capable” of being used as a weapon will not be allowed inside.

“Security staff will be present to answer any questions or address concerns about navigating the new safety process. AI technology will not adversely affect people with medical devices and emergency care will not be delayed,” reads a news release from the health authority.

Nova Scotia Health has previously said items deemed unsafe would be stored and returned to their owners when they leave the site.

However, prohibited items, like firearms, will be confiscated and may be turned over to police.

The AI systems will continue to be installed at additional sites across the province over the coming months, with emergency departments being given priority.
