Solution set for covered bridge closure in Sackville, N.B.

There’s some good news for people who live near a covered bridge in Sackville, N.B., but they’ll have to be patient.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) has plans to build a modular bridge right next to the Wheaton Covered Bridge.

Built in 1916, the 50-metre bridge has been closed since July 11, 2024 due to significant structural issues.

“The department understands the importance of this transportation link to the area and is working to expedite the installation process,” said DTI spokesperson Jacob MacDonald. “However, the modular bridge is unlikely to be in place before Fall 2026.”

Farmers in the area who use the Wheaton Covered Bridge daily have been frustrated by the closure.

In a statement to CTV News, Memramcook-Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton said she’s been pushing for a solution that would preserve the heritage and history of the bridge while helping people in the community cross the river.

Mitton said the new bridge will check both of those boxes.

“Once the modular bridge is in place, residents, farmers, and first responders should be able to get across the river safely,” said Mitton.

The Green MLA hopes the next step is to make a plan to turn the 109-year-old structure into a pedestrian and cyclist bridge.

Mitton said she’s raised that point with Isabelle Thériault, the Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

“She’s also responsible for active transportation, so this bridge is very relevant on all of these files,” said Mitton.

MacDonald said the covered bridge will remain closed to traffic and pedestrians.

A detour route will remain in place to direct traffic around the current closure.
