The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) says it has “no reasonable grounds” to believe members of the Miramichi Police Force committed a criminal offence in connection to the death of a man. Despite the ruling, SiRT director Erin Nauss said they have concerns with the actions of “other persons who SiRT does not have jurisdiction to investigate.” They have forwarded the file to the RCMP for further investigation. According to the SiRT report, on Aug. 4, 2025, the Miramichi Police Force contacted SiRT about the death of an adult male while in their custody. “Upon review of the evidence, I am satisfied that the actions or inactions of police officers did not contribute to the death of the AP (affected party) and were not criminal in nature,” Nauss said in the report. Nauss noted that the SiRT report does not outline specific facts and evidence from the case as the investigation is still ongoing with the RCMP. “Depending on the outcome of the RCMP investigation, SiRT may issue a supplemental report at a later date,” Nauss said.
