Power restored on Deer Island after substation theft: NB Power

An outage on Deer Island, N.B., was caused by a theft at a substation, according to NB Power.

The power utility said they responded to the outage affecting roughly 622 customers on Monday.

“The outage was caused by theft at a substation,” the utility said in a social media post.

Phil Landry, acting vice president of operations with NB Power, said power was restored to the island by Tuesday afternoon. He noted pieces of wire that goes from the substation to the ground were stolen.

“The folks doing this (stealing) are putting themselves in great harm,” Landry said. “Touching the wrong wire is a question of life and death.

“We don’t know what they’ve done, so it creates a hazardous situation. You’re exposing the public to potential harm.”

Landry said they don’t yet know the cost of the theft.
