Winnipeg’s mayor is addressing 7-Eleven closures around the city, saying the store is moving to a different model. At a news conference on Tuesday, Scott Gillingham was asked about the recent closure of two 7-Eleven stores after several shops have shuttered over the last few years. The mayor responded by saying it would be best to ask 7-Eleven for the reason for the closures, adding that there’s a discussion to be had about safety. He noted it’s also his understanding that the store is moving to a “different model.” “If you take a look at what’s happening across North America, they’ve closed hundreds of stores across North America,” he said. “So, this is not just a Winnipeg thing.” Last month, the convenience chain announced it expects to close hundreds of North American locations this year. Past closures in Winnipeg have been attributed to losses brought on by crime. Despite these closures, Gillingham said he was told Winnipeg would still be getting new locations.
