‘I’m a little nervous’: Moncton kids head back to school

Many New Brunswick students started the new school year on Tuesday.

Hundreds of nervous students made their way to Forest Glen Elementary in Moncton, N.B., for the first day of the new school year on Tuesday.

The Kindergarten to Grade 4 school has approximately 400 students including Henry Blackmore, who is starting Grade 2.

“I’m a little nervous, but I think it’s going to be a great time to see all of my friends and it’ll be nice to see the teacher and to learn,” said Henry.

His best buddy Thomas Patterson is going into Grade 3.

“I’m excited to meet my new friends and my new teacher and see my new class,” said Thomas.

For Anglophone East Supt. Randy MacLEAN, it was his 28th first day of school as an educator.

“It’s my favourite day of the year,” said MacLEAN. “I love the first day of school.”

Since becoming superintendent for Moncton-area schools four years ago, MacLEAN has visited different schools each year to welcome the students, say hello to the parents and wish staff well.

“This is where the energy is. This is where the parents are. This is where our staff greets our students. This is where our bus drivers pick our students up and drop them off on the first day. I just love the energy,” said MacLEAN.

While many of the kids may have been a bit anxious about the new year, MacLEAN noticed some nervousness among parents as well.

“Nervous faces, not only on the children, nervous faces of kindergarten parents and Grade 1,” said MacLEAN. “It’s a great day all around.”
