The City of Fredericton is adding six new hybrid diesel-electric buses to its fleet. Fredericton Transit currently operates 31 buses, including four hybrid diesel-electric models. The city says the new buses will replace aging vehicles over the next two years. “Investing in six new hybrid diesel-electric buses will support a greener future for the City of Fredericton that is aligned with our current climate change action goals” said Deputy Mayor Jocelyn Pike in a news release. “These six new buses will modernize our transit fleet and provide riders with a reliable, comfortable and affordable means of transportation throughout our growing community.” New Brunswick’s capital is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 50 per cent below 2004 levels by 2030 and attain net-zero emissions by 2050, as part of its climate change action. Fredericton adopted green fleet guidelines for all city-owned vehicles and equipment in September 2024. The guidelines recommend choosing low-carbon options when the total cost of ownership is lower than conventional alternatives. The city is purchasing the vehicles from New Flyer Bus at an estimated cost of $1.4 million each. The buses will be financed over a period of 10 years.
