The Fredericton International Airport has announced it is adding direct Air Transat flights to Cancun, Mexico, next winter. The announcement was made Thursday at the airport authority’s annual general meeting. The airport says the addition highlights its recent trend in growth. It reports Air Canada, Sunwing and Porter all increased service last year. WestJet also added seasonal service to Calgary and Porter extended daily service to Ottawa. “We have a close relationship with our airlines, tourism departments at both the province and the City of Fredericton, the Chamber of Commerce, and so many more – this is a community that works together, and the results speak for themselves,” said Fredericton International Airport Authority president and CEO Johanne Gallant in a news release. It is estimated visitors arriving in New Brunswick via the airport spend $94.5 million annually in the province. “Flying through YFC makes our local economy stronger. The airport supports 1,345 jobs in our region and the travel we enable makes it possible to attract meetings and conventions, makes our region more attractive to businesses, and brings new revenue to our tourism businesses,” said the authority’s public relations manager, Kate O’Rourke. The airport has two upcoming projects. One runway will be extended this year to better accommodate larger aircrafts. The other runway will undergo resurfacing next year.
