An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease near the downtown core is under investigation by Toronto Public Health (TPH). In a news release issued Monday, health officials said the outbreak of the respiratory disease covers an approximately one-kilometre radius of the intersection of Bathurst and Dupont streets. So far, six confirmed cases have been identified among people who live, work or have visited the area. TPH said the individuals became symptomatic between July 2 and July 26. The source of the outbreak has yet to be confirmed, but TPH said possible sites are being investigated. “TPH has notified local hospitals and health partners to help identify and report any additional potential cases.” Health officials said they are also working to determine if this outbreak is connected to another Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at Castleview Wychwood Towers, a nearby long-term care home. At least five cases of the disease have been confirmed as part of that outbreak. Legionnaires’ disease does not spread from person to person, and as such TPH said the risk to the public remains low. The disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which are naturally present in water sources and can also be found in man-made water systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, sprinkler systems, humidifiers and decorative fountains, according to the city. People can become ill by breathing in small droplets of water containing the bacteria. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and muscle aches. Older adults, people who smoke, and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of sever outcomes if infected.
