Final weekend for flagship N.B. maple syrup tradition

“Maple, the First Taste of Spring” at New Brunswick’s Kings Landing Historical Settlement hosted its final day on Sunday.

It’s the final weekend for an annual New Brunswick tradition that has ushered in spring since 1984.

“Maple, the First Taste of Spring” at New Brunswick’s Kings Landing Historical Settlement, will host its final day on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wet heavy snow on Saturday didn’t deter crowds from kicking off the event’s second weekend, which includes sap boiling demonstrations, maple syrup candy making on fresh snow, horse wagon rides and tours of historic buildings.

“We’ve had dedicated visitors braving the winter weather to be here, and that tells us something,” says Melissa Lansing, the business development and marketing manager at Kings Landing. “People are hungry for this kind of authentic, living history experience where they can spend some quality time with their loved ones.”

“We’d love to see even more neighbours and families come out for our final day this Sunday.”

An on-site charity breakfast, organized by the Luxor Shriners of New Brunswick, is also fundraising for children’s medical expenses.

The site, about 25 minutes west of Fredericton, is a recreation of a 19th century rural community with costumed interpreters and historic artifacts.

Kings Landing will officially open for its regular season in June.

The first official day of spring is March 20.
