‘Significant winter weather’ expected across the Maritimes later this week

A special weather statement has been issued for most of the Maritimes, warning of “significant winter weather” later this week.

Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, snow is expected to fall across most of the province Thursday morning before changing to ice pellets and periods of freezing rain in the afternoon.

Environment Canada says southern parts of the province could see the snow change to rain late in the day.

“There remains at this time uncertainty in the icing amounts,” said the agency. “Warnings may be required as this event draws nearer.”

New Brunswick

Environment Canada says the snow will begin in New Brunswick Thursday morning and end in the evening.

It is expected amounts will exceed 15 cm in some areas.

“Travel could become difficult as heavy snow may come during busy traffic hours. Motorists should be prepared for winter driving conditions,” the statement reads.

P.E.I.

Significant snow is also expected in Prince Edward Island, starting around midday Thursday.

Western P.E.I. will see the most snow, with 15 to 20 cm expected.

Environment Canada says eastern and central P.E.I. could see the snow mix with ice pellets Thursday evening and overnight.
