Mental Health Association to receive NSLC donation

The votes are in and the winner has been chosen in the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation charity giveaway.

The NSLC announced today the Canadian Mental Health Association will receive the $29,891.70 accidentally charged to customers last month.

The Crown agency admits it collected nearly $30,000 from people it shouldn’t have on March 30 due to a computer glitch.

The NSLC had scheduled a price hike for April 1, but prices changed two days earlier.

It announced last week it would be donating to charity to make up for the error.

Nova Scotians had a week to vote for their favourite charity, with the winner receiving the full amount collected in error.

More than 67,000 votes were cast and nearly 300 charities were nominated. The Canadian Mental Health Association won by a margin of about 3,000.

“Congratulations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, and a big thank you to everyone who participated in our efforts to make things right,” said NSLC President and CEO Bret Mitchell in a statement.

“The sheer number of votes says a lot about how passionate Nova Scotians are about giving back.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association says it is thrilled with the announcement and the support. They are considering creating an awareness campaign with the money.
