HRM councillor charged with impaired driving after car backs into home

A long-time Halifax Regional councillor has been charged with impaired driving.

Reg Rankin, who represents Timberlea – Beechville – Clayton Park West, was arrested at his home in Timberlea Wednesday evening.

Police say an impaired driver was charged after backing into his own home.

“Well, I was very saddened to hear about it and it’s a serious situation,” said HRM Mayor Mike Savage.

“Councillor Rankin is entitled to due process and a chance to reflect. I’ve spoken to him and I think that he’s doing that now.”

Rankin has been issued a temporary licence for seven days after which he will be banned from driving for three months.

Rankin is due to appear in court on May 5 to face the impaired driving charge.

In 2011, Rankin took a leave of absence from Halifax Regional Council to seek professional help and medical treatment.

Rankin has served as councillor for the Timberlea area since 1991.

CTV News reached out to Rankin for comment, but calls were not returned.
