Freezing rain warnings remain in place across the Maritimes, N.B. and P.E.I. schools closed

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says freezing rain that continues to fall in the Maritimes Monday afternoon will turn over to rain.

An icy spring storm has made its way to the Maritimes, closing schools across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Monday.

A freezing rain warning remains in place in New Brunswick, except for parts along the Fundy coast.

Environment Canada says five to 10 mm is expected over an six-hour time span.

A rainfall warning is also in effect along the Fundy coast, where up to 40 mm is expected Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Canada says 25 to 50 mm is expected Monday night into Tuesday afternoon.

“Rain will intensify late this evening across southwestern Nova Scotia and move east overnight, reaching the eastern half of the province by Tuesday morning. The highest accumulations are expected to occur along the Atlantic coast on Tuesday,” the agency says.

A freezing rain warning is also in effect across P.E.I., where up to five mm is possible over a two-hour timespan.

School closures

All schools in P.E.I. are closed. All schools are closed in New Brunswick, expect in the Anglophone South district, where buses will run on a one-hour delay, but schools will open on time.

In Nova Scotia, some schools are closed in Cape Breton. A full list of school closures can be found here.

Travel

Marine Atlantic says the 11:45 a.m. crossing from North Sydney, N.S., to Port aux Basques, N.L., is cancelled. The 11:45 a.m. crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney is also cancelled.

Bay Ferries says its Saint John, N.B., departure has been delayed until 10 a.m. The 4 p.m. Digby, N.S., departure has been cancelled.

511 New Brunswick is warning some highways in New Brunswick are covered in ice Monday morning.

Power

There are currently no significant power outages in the Maritimes.

The same icy storm coated parts of Ontario in thick layers of ice on Sunday, leaving more than 350,000 customers without electricity.
