Ferry trips rescheduled, cancelled in the Maritimes due to bad weather

Ferry trips in the Maritimes have been impacted ahead of a round of bad weather, indirectly caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Marine Atlantic has rescheduled Thursday’s North Sydney, N.S., to Port aux Basques, N.L., 11:15 p.m. departure to 10:30 p.m.

Several other crossings on Friday and Saturday have been cancelled.

Northumberland Ferries Limited (NFL) says all sailings between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., scheduled for Friday have been cancelled.

The 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. departures from Wood Islands and the 8:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. departures from Caribou are also cancelled for Saturday.

“We will be monitoring wind conditions closely and further updates on the remaining sailings for Saturday, Nov 1 will be issued as information becomes available,” reads a release from NFL.

The Fundy Rose’s 4 p.m. Friday departure from Digby, N.S., has been cancelled as well as the 9 a.m. Saint John, N.B., departure on Saturday.

Bay Ferries says additional Saturday and Sunday sailings may be impacted as well.

A low-pressure system will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Maritimes on Friday.

Special weather statements and rainfall warnings have been issued across the region.

Up to 50 mm of rain is expected along with peak wind gusts of 40 to 80 km/h.

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says areas most likely to experience the higher rain totals include around Atlantic coastal Nova Scotia, Bay of Fundy areas of New Brunswick and northeastern New Brunswick, including Miramichi, Bathurst and the Acadian Peninsula.
