Favourable weather, new record at Bluenose Marathon

For the second consecutive year, Greg Wieczorek won the Bluenose Marathon and set a new record for the event of 2:28:53.

Thousands of runners from across Canada laced up their sneakers and hit the streets of Halifax on Sunday.

In fact, more runners than ever ran in races included within this weekend's eighth annual Bluenose Marathon.

And after past years which have included rain, wind, cold, or a combination of all three, the weather was the side of runners this year.

For the second consecutive year, Greg Wieczorek won the marathon and set a new record in doing so.

Wieczorek credited the cool weather for his fast time of 2:28:53.

"Couldn't have asked for a better day," he said. "All in all, the marathon gods were smiling down on us today and I'm glad I could put it together."

More than 300 brave runners tackled the full marathon, a race that stretched 42.2 km across the HRM.

There were four different races taking place on Sunday including a 5 km run, a 10 km run, a half marathon, and the full marathon. In all, more than 7,000 runners participated.

A youth run was held Sunday under the Bluenose Marathon weekend banner.

Many streets around the city, including the Mcdonald Bridge, were closed to traffic during the race. However, fans lined the street and cheered on runners throughout the route.
