Late last year, Lucas D'Onofrio decided he was going to propose to his long-time girlfriend sometime in the New Year. He had no idea then, that it would eventually happen in a Florida hospital room on the eve of her last round of chemotherapy.

The 24-year-old proposed to his girlfriend, Tamara Bruzzo, last Friday in an emotional moment at a Boca Raton hospital.

In the dimmed hospital room, surrounded by balloons, flame-less candles and holding a bouquet of roses, D'Onofrio asked Bruzzo to marry him. She said yes.

As the two kissed, fireworks went off in the distance, and friends and family members entered the room to congratulate the pair.

A video of the heartfelt proposal has gone viral, viewed more than 123,000 times as of Wednesday morning. Actress Sofia Vergara posted the video to her personal Facebook page.

D'Onofrio said it was after Bruzzo was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in February that he decided the time was right to propose.

And, as she began completing the six-prescribed rounds of chemotherapy, he started to make a plan.

He decided that he would propose the night before she was scheduled to have her last chemotherapy session.

"I wanted to do it at the hospital," he told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview. "I wanted to do it the day before she did chemo, because after she gets very sick."

The couple began dating six years ago after meeting in high school.

D'Onofrio, who works as an insurance underwriter, said he was immediately drawn to her because of her spirit – something that she maintains to this day.

"I love how strong she is. I love how she has a positive attitude no matter what's going on in her life,” he said. "We can go be going through the worst times, and she will always be there."

'It's definitely made us stronger'

D'Onofrio said while he had known for some time that he wanted to marry Bruzzo, it was while she underwent treatment that he decided that it was the right time to ask her.

He said it was especially difficult for them in the beginning as she underwent various tests.

"It was very hard for us. She would cry a lot, thinking 'Why me?'" he said.

But D'Onofrio said as she progressed through her treatments he realized that they had grown stronger.

"Sometimes you do take relationships for granted; you take love for granted. But when you see someone like that going through the pain she went through, that really makes you realize you shouldn't," he said.

"We've always loved each other, but this is the closest we've been in the last six years."

And though he had a feeling that she would say 'Yes,' he still felt relieved when it was official.

He said that although he had prepared remarks to say to her at the time, when she entered the hospital room he suddenly found himself at a loss for words.

D'Onofrio says he can't quite remember what he said as he asked her to marry him, though all of it was an honest reflection of how strongly he feels about her.

"Everything really came out of my heart that I spoke right there," he said.

Bruzzo is set to leave the hospital on Wednesday, and will meet with her doctors next week to get an update on her cancer.

While it is still very early, the freshly-engaged pair is considering having their wedding in the fall of 2016.
