1. 8 children killed: Not even a week after a fatal hostage-taking incident in Sydney rocked the usually peaceful nation of Australia, tragedy has struck again, this time in Cairns. Police called to a house for a report of an injured woman found the bodies of eight children between 18-months to 15 years. Police believe a 34-year-old woman found alive at the scene with chest wounds is the mother of seven of the children. No charges have been laid.

2. Cop out? Dalhousie University’s plan to pursue “restorative justice” instead of suspending or expelling male dentistry students accused of making sexually violent comments to women isn’t sitting well with the rest of the student body.

3. Follower fury: As Instagram tries to weed out fake accounts, some users of the photo-sharing service woke up yesterday to find they had fewer followers – and rage ensued.

4. Unthinkable crime: Who could do such a thing? That’s what thousands of Canadians are asking the day after 101-year-old Second World War veteran was tied up and robbed in his Ottawa condo by a man dressed up as a city employee. Police are still trying to find a suspect.

5. Takes a village: Residents of Audlem, a tiny British town, have created a tear-jerker of a video to raise money for a local mother battling terminal cancer. More than 1,100 people came together to sing “Amazing Grace” for Berni Cliffe, who has been given only months to live. “I try hard not to think too much that it’s about me,” she says. “I know that sounds silly but I don’t think I’d be able to come to and share it all if I realized it was all done for me.”
