A garbage truck exploded as it compacted trash containing oxygen tanks that were improperly discarded, knocking a sanitation worker to the ground in Milwaukee, new video shows. The explosion occurred on July 15, with two workers standing behind the garbage truck. One of them was hospitalized after suffering an eye injury and concussion, ABC WISN 12 reported on Monday. “We’re very fortunate that he was wearing his safety glasses and that’s …what we train everybody to do,” Rick Meyers, a sanitation services manager with the City of Milwaukee’s department of public works, told the news outlet. “It definitely could’ve been worse,” Meyers added. Milwaukee police are investigating the incident, according to the public works department. The video also shows a similar incident in Ohio last year, with pieces of shrapnel scattering after the explosion. Another oxygen tank had exploded in Milwaukee two years ago, according to ABC WISN 12, though no one was hurt. With files from ABC WISN 12’s Nick Bohr
