Two drivers have now been charged after a collision that claimed the life of a cyclist in Southwest Middlesex earlier this year. Middlesex OPP say emergency crews were called to Melbourne Road between Ina Dale Drive and Olde Drive on May 4 at about 12:17 p.m. following reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist. Police, along with members of Oneida Nation Police, Strathroy-Caradoc police, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and local firefighters, responded to the scene. The cyclist, a 25-year-old resident of Southwest Middlesex, was taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital as a precaution. Following a months-long investigation, police have charged a 19 year old of Middlesex Centre with careless driving causing death. He is also charged with driving with an open container of liquor and being a person under 19 years old in possession of liquor under the Liquor Licence Control Act. Investigators said a second collision occurred at the scene when another vehicle struck the rear of the vehicle involved in the fatal crash. As a result, a 72-year-old Appin resident has been charged with careless driving. Both accused were released and are scheduled to appear in Ontario Provincial Offences Court in London at a later date.
