A Michigan courtroom turned into an awkward roadside drama this week after a woman logged into a virtual hearing from what appeared to be the driver’s seat of a moving vehicle, prompting a sharp rebuke from the presiding judge.

According to a report by Fox 2 Detroit, Kimberly Carroll signed in late to a Zoom court session while facing a default judgment over an alleged debt of US$1,788.08, plus additional court and service fees. But it wasn’t her financial situation that stole the spotlight. It was her apparent multitasking.

The hearing, overseen by Judge Michael K. McNally, took a turn when a participant labelled “iPhone” joined the call. Once Carroll enabled her camera, the judge quickly zeroed in on what looked like a driver’s seat view.

“You can not be driving ma’am,” McNally said. “What are you doing?”

Carroll insisted she was not behind the wheel, claiming instead that she was a passenger en route to a family emergency. But the explanation only deepened the judge’s skepticism.

“Am I crazy or does it not look like you’re driving that car?” he asked.

The exchange quickly escalated into a back-and-forth that might have felt more at home in a sitcom than a courtroom. When pressed about her position in the vehicle, Carroll said she was seated on the left side, an answer that raised further eyebrows.

“How would you be on the left-hand side if you’re a passenger in the front seat? Am I missing something?” McNally replied.

Despite repeated questioning, Carroll maintained her version of events. The judge, unconvinced, pointed out details like the seatbelt positioning before delivering a blunt assessment: “Now you’re lying to me, right?”

The moment reached its peak when McNally demanded visual proof.

“Let me see the driver,” he said.

Carroll hesitated, saying she needed permission from the driver, before eventually exiting the vehicle. That did little to salvage the situation.

“Do you think I’m that stupid?” the judge shot back, ultimately ending the hearing and entering a default judgment against her.

“You lied to me,” he added, instructing court staff to note that Carroll had been unavailable and then appeared while driving.

Carroll later acknowledged her actions in a statement shared with Fox 2, saying: “Appearing on a Zoom court hearing while I was driving was poor judgment, and I regret that decision.”

She added that the incident becoming viral has had broader personal consequences, calling it “a brief moment of poor judgment” that spiralled into a “public spectacle.”

Still, the case serves as a modern cautionary tale: in the era of virtual courtrooms, showing up is important.
