The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is looking to put another type of eyes in the sky. For the next 90 days, beginning Thursday, CPS will deploy two Skydio X10 drones during select incidents in northeast and southeast Calgary to assist first responders on calls. Officials say, “the trial will assess the effectiveness of drones in improving situational awareness, supporting operational decision-making and enhancing public and officer safety.” These remotely piloted drones will be deployed from a secure location and will provide officers with real-time information to better understand incidents. In many cases, the drones will also arrive before ground units, allowing officers to assess risks, locate individuals and make informed decisions. CPS said these drones have already been proven successful by other police agencies. “This trial will help us determine how the technology can support public safety in Calgary by providing responding officers with valuable information about an incident, often before they arrive on scene,” said Supt. Jodi Gach of the CPS operational support division. Transport Canada has approved the use of the drones, and the 90-day trial will be conducted in accordance with Transport Canada regulations and CPS policies.
