Winnipeg election candidate’s signs vandalized with ‘hateful’ graffiti

Two bus benches and roughly half a dozen election signs were vandalized with hateful graffiti in the Tuxedo neighbourhood over the weekend.

A campaign spokesperson for Marty Morantz, the Conservative candidate in Winnipeg West, confirmed the incidents were reported to police.

CTV News Winnipeg cameras captured images of the signs, with some vandalized with the word “traitor,” along with an ableist slur. A photo of Morantz, who is Jewish, was also defaced to look like Adolf Hitler. The signs were cleaned Monday afternoon.

Morantz’s campaign called the messages hate speech and antisemitic.

Police confirmed Tuesday morning they were investigating the graffiti to the election signs.

Defacing, stealing or altering an election sign is prohibited under the Canada Elections Act.

Liberal candidate condemns antisemitic vandalism

Doug Eyolfson, the Liberal candidate for Winnipeg West, took to social media to condemn the vandalism, saying he was “shocked and disgusted” to see antisemitic vandalism.

“Attacking a political candidate because of their faith is deplorable,” he said in a statement. “Antisemitism has no place in Canada, full stop. All Jewish Canadians deserve to feel safe in their communities.”
