The City of Winnipeg is seeing the highest level of homelessness since 2015, according to estimates gathered in a recent street census. On Tuesday, End Homelessness Winnipeg released some results of its 2024 Winnipeg Street Census. “The report reveals the highest number of people experiencing homelessness since tracking began in 2015, underscoring urgent needs for housing and supports,” the organization said in a media advisory. The census found at the time of the count on Nov. 5, 2024, there were 2,469 unhoused individuals in the city. It also found Indigenous peoples made up nearly 80 per cent of those experiencing homelessness (First Nations 62.8 per cent, Metis 15.0 per cent, Inuit 0.4 per cent). It noted 12.9 per cent were identified as newcomers, having arrived in Canada as an immigrant, refugee, refugee claimant or through another process.
