Winnipeg Police Service to test body cameras for officers

Winnipeg Police officers will be wearing cameras this summer.

Chief Gene Bowers told the police board Friday 40 officers will be equipped with body cameras this June as part of a pilot project.

He says the program will help improve transparency.

Bowers says this will come at no cost to the service, as the cameras will be provided for free during the trial period.

Previous estimates to equip all officers have been projected as costing north of $30 million over six years.

Bowers says because of technological advances, the price has come down substantially.
