Here’s how many speeding tickets the Winnipeg Police Service has issued in the past three months

Winnipeg police have written more than 3,800 speeding tickets to drivers in the last three months. Jeff Keele has more.

The Winnipeg Police Service is focusing on road safety after they issued a record number of speeding tickets relative to recent years.

Chief Gene Bowers shared the road safety focus, which will target speeders, with the Winnipeg Police Board last Friday.

“We wanted to concentrate on speeding because speeding causes serious injury and death,” Bowers said.

He says in the second quarter of this year, officers handed out 3,815 speeding tickets, the most they’ve seen in at least five years for a quarter.

“We see speed as definitely an issue when it comes to safety on the street,” Bowers said.

Jeff Brown walks his dog twice a day in River Heights, and says sometimes drivers zoom right by him.

“I see a lot of cars not doing the speed limit,” Brown said. “A lot of guys are checking for traffic and then just doing drag races down here.”

Recent surveys done by CAA show 82 per cent of Manitobans are concerned about speeding, while 90 per cent of parents reported seeing dangerous driving around schools, including speeding.

“We know that it’s one of the quickest and easiest things we can do as motorists to ensure safety and even small reductions have a noticeable impact,” Friesen said.

In an attempt to reduce speeds by narrowing the road, the city recently placed removable calming curbs in various locations to see if they should be made permanent.

On Cambridge Street, some homeowners told CTV News the curbs aren’t slowing anyone down.

Brown says he’d be in favour of the curbs staying put, as he’s noticed a minimal impact.

“It’s helped a little bit, but we’ll still see the occasional speeders, but it’s definitely helped somewhat,” Brown said.

Bowers also told the police board officers issued 895 tickets for distracted driving during the same period.
