Wildfire smoke promotes air quality warning for parts of Manitoba: ECCC

An air quality warning has been issued for parts of Manitoba, including Winnipeg, as wildfires continue to burn throughout the province.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) announced the warning just before 12:30 p.m., saying poor air quality and reduced visibility are expected over the next few days.

The warning is for Winnipeg and most of eastern and southeastern Manitoba, ranging from Emerson up to the Little Grand Rapids.

It also stretches past the Ontario border, impacting areas like Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances and Atikokan.

ECCC said wildfire smoke can impact anyone’s health, no matter their age.

“You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance,” ECCC said in the warning.

Those who could be impacted the most by the smoke are those over the age of 65, infants and young children, pregnant people and people with existing health conditions.

“Check in on others who are in your care or live nearby who may be more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution.”
