He has been chosen. West St. Paul’s Carter Bear, an 18-year-old winger with Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, was selected by the Detroit Red Wings yesterday. Bear was selected 13th overall in the first round of the 2025 National Hockey League entry draft. As an alternate captain with the Silvertips, Bear scored 40 goals and 42 assists in the 2024-25 season and compiled 141 points since the 2022-23 season. Although born in Winnipeg, Bear’s family is from Peguis First Nation. Southern Chiefs’ Organization congratulated Bear in their recent Facebook post following the draft. “The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) congratulates Carter Bear of Peguis First Nation on his incredible achievement of being drafted into the National Hockey League,” the post read. “This is a historic and proud moment for Carter, his family, and his Nation, and a testament to the hard work, talent, and dedication he has shown throughout his hockey journey.”
